Tinubu Celebrates Sultan Of Sokoto As He Marks 20 Years On The Throne
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, on the occasion of his 20th anniversary on the throne, commending his contributions to religious harmony, national unity and development.
In a personally signed statement on Monday, the President described the Sultan as a respected leader and brother whose guidance, support and commitment to Nigeria have remained valuable over the years.
Tinubu praised the traditional ruler for providing purposeful leadership since ascending the throne two decades ago, noting that he had not only preserved the heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate but had also strengthened its role in promoting peace and national development.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the President particularly recognised the Sultan’s efforts in fostering peaceful relations among religious groups, especially through his position as Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.
He observed that under the Sultan’s leadership, Christians and Muslims had continued to identify areas of common ground, while religious and cultural diversity had increasingly been recognised as a source of national strength rather than division.
Tinubu also commended the Sultan, who serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for his advocacy for religious tolerance, peace in Northern Nigeria and the Sahel region, as well as his contributions to education, particularly opportunities for the girl-child.
The President further acknowledged the traditional ruler’s support for farmers, public health initiatives and vulnerable members of society, describing his reign as people-centred.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Tinubu expressed appreciation for the Sultan’s friendship, prayers and counsel, describing his advice as patriotic and guided by Nigeria’s best interests.
He said the Sultan had remained more than a traditional ruler, serving as a moral authority, a voice of moderation and a bridge between different religious communities, while also offering guidance to leaders across the country.
As part of his congratulatory message, Tinubu prayed that Almighty Allah would continue to grant the Sultan good health, long life and renewed wisdom to sustain his contributions to Sokoto State and the country.
He also expressed hope that the monarch’s reign would continue to promote peace in Sokoto, strengthen national unity and bring honour to the Muslim community.
The President concluded by joining the Sultan’s subjects and well-wishers in Nigeria and abroad to celebrate the historic milestone, wishing him continued success on the throne.
