NYSC Corper Cries Out After Contributing ₦2,000 To Principal’s Send-Off But Gets No Food
An NYSC corps member serving at a secondary school in Nasarawa State has recounted an experience at a retirement send-off ceremony, alleging that she contributed ₦2,000 towards the event but was left without food.
The corps member shared her experience in an online narration, raising concerns about the treatment she and other junior teachers allegedly received during the celebration.
According to her account, the school principal had asked teachers to contribute ₦2,000 each to organise the send-off for a retiring senior staff member. She said she made the payment because she wanted to avoid any disagreement with the school management.
The event reportedly featured jollof rice and a large cake. However, the corps member claimed that the food was exhausted before it reached the junior teachers.
She alleged that while senior teachers were served inside the staff room, junior staff members were left outside under the sun without food.
The situation reportedly became more upsetting when the junior teachers were allegedly asked to wash the plates and arrange the chairs after the celebration instead of being served a meal.
The corps member said she felt disappointed because she had contributed financially to the event but did not receive any portion of the food.
Recounting what happened afterwards, she said she discussed the incident with a colleague serving at the same school. According to her, the colleague explained that such treatment had allegedly become a yearly occurrence and advised her not to contribute money to similar events in the future.
The colleague reportedly told her to simply explain that she did not have money whenever such contributions were requested.
Reflecting on the experience, the corps member concluded her account with the words, “I have learnt my lesson.”
Her account has sparked discussions about workplace relationships and the treatment of junior employees and corps members, particularly when they are expected to make financial contributions towards official celebrations.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the incident highlights the importance of fairness and consideration in workplace activities, especially when contributions are requested from staff members across different levels.
