According to an affidavit presented in court, the Department of State Services (DSS) has provided some of the reasons for detaining the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele. The DSS stated that Emefiele was arrested due to “reasonable suspicion of committing acts which constitute a criminal breach of trust, incitement to violence, criminal misappropriation of public funds, economic sabotage, economic crimes of national security dimension, and undermining the security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

In the ongoing court proceedings, the DSS and the Office of Attorney General of the Federation (OAGF) have opposed granting bail to Emefiele, arguing that he poses a flight risk and would potentially flee the country if released. They described Emefiele, who is challenging his detention, as a “flight risk.”

Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 10 and subsequently arrested and detained by the DSS. Prior to this, there were reports that Emefiele had made payments for studies abroad using various departments of the central bank, potentially to avoid detection. SaharaReporters had also revealed concerns that the study leave granted to Emefiele could provide him with an opportunity to flee the country before the end of President Buhari’s term, amidst corruption and terrorism-financing allegations against him.

Former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle had urged President Buhari not to grant study leave to Emefiele, stating that he should remain in Nigeria to give a full account to the incoming administration. In addition, Senator Shehu Sani had previously expressed that Emefiele’s activities under the incoming administration would be scrutinized, referring to him as a “zebra in the hands of tigers.”

During the court hearing, the DSS and the OAGF filed counter-affidavits, reiterating their opposition to the granting of bail to Emefiele. The OAGF dismissed speculation that Emefiele was being held for terrorist-related crimes and clarified that he was not being victimized for his involvement in politics or the naira redesign policy. The case has been adjourned until July 13, 2023, for a ruling.
