The Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (MODHIP) and the US Army Medical Research Directorate-Africa/Nigeria (USAMRD-A/N) are playing a crucial role in strengthening HIV prevention, care, and treatment services.
The program aims to provide support services to military personnel, their families, and civilians residing within and around the barracks. Additionally, the program focuses on prevention, detection, and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, necessitating collaboration at local and international levels.
The Nigerian government’s commitment, alongside the United States’ contributions, has resulted in significant progress, making the partnership a model worth emulating.
The program, established eighteen years ago, initially targeted curbing HIV/AIDS among troops and their communities. Over time, it has expanded to thirty-four program sites with the added responsibility of handling emerging infectious diseases.
Mr. David Greene, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy, highlighted the United Nations’ substantial support to Nigeria in controlling HIV/AIDS, malaria, lassa fever, COVID-19, and other health challenges.
