The security outfit released a press statement over the weekend, asserting that the vessel was heading in the wrong direction, prompting doubts about its activities.

On August 2, 2023, Tantita operatives approached MT Praisel and found naval personnel on board, with discrepancies between the vessel’s stated destination and the NMDPRA permit.

The master of the vessel indicated sailing to Bonny, while the permit indicated Koko as the port of discharge for storage only.

Following standard procedure, Tantita requested further clarification and permission to take cargo samples, leading to the naval personnel’s request for immediate disembarkation.

The issue was escalated to higher authorities, and the vessel was anchored off Escravos roads for further investigation.

On August 3, 2023, Tantita dispatched personnel to collect samples from the vessel in the presence of the Nigerian Navy and NSCDC. However, news of the interception broke in the media, and Tantita found itself confronted with a Naval headquarters’ press statement suggesting that the NMDPRA had given approval for MT Praisel to proceed to Bonny for discharge.

Yet, Tantita claimed not to have seen that documentation, and the Nigerian Navy clearance they witnessed did not state Bonny as the port of discharge, leaving reasonable grounds for suspicion.
