When asked about the reason behind the non-confirmation of the 17 nominees, Mojeed Fatai Adebola, the Chief Whip of the Assembly and Chairman of the Screening Committee, stated that the rejection of the nominees resulted from a collective decision by all members of the state assembly, rather than his individual choice.

He emphasized that their role was to assess the nominees’ track records and not to make personal judgments.

In an interview with TVC News on Wednesday night, Adebola explained, “Our mandate was simply to screen, not to confirm or disqualify any nominee.

The reasons for the rejection are known to the entire house (comprising 40 members), and not attributed to an individual. We evaluated the nominees’ backgrounds thoroughly.”

Likewise, Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, addressed the situation during an interview with TVC News.

Akosile noted that there had been no official communication from the House of Assembly to the Governor. He highlighted that both the executive and legislative branches were committed to serving the people of Lagos and that Governor Sanwo-Olu would engage with the lawmakers to arrive at the best decision.

Akosile further stated, “There hasn’t been any official communication yet to the Governor. There are processes. The House of Assembly is expected to inform the Governor of their actions, and that step hasn’t been taken yet. We have seen reports in the media stating that 17 nominees were disqualified.”

He continued, “The House of Assembly made their decisions for specific reasons known to them. There will be a meeting between the executive and the legislators to find common ground on this issue.

I don’t think anything extraordinary has occurred. The executive and legislative branches are collaborating to ensure that the people of Lagos benefit from democracy’s dividends.”

Regarding allegations of marginalization that prompted protests in certain quarters, Akosile shared, “The Governor has engaged with religious leaders, and efforts are underway to reach a constructive resolution for Lagos’ progress. Our priority is ensuring inclusivity for all.”
