Minister Nyesom Wike Orders Immediate Arrest Of Building Owner Following Abuja Collapse

Wike expressed his gratitude to the emergency response agencies that participated in the rescue operations during his visit to the scene.
He conveyed his sorrow over the loss of two lives and urged the Permanent Secretary to raise funds for covering the hospital expenses of those currently hospitalized.
The minister highlighted that the area where the building stood had originally been earmarked for resettlement. He noted that over the years, the FCT Administration had been unable to implement the resettlement plans.
Wike shared his sentiments, stating, “This morning, we were greeted with distressing news of the building collapse. This is not the scenario we anticipated.
I extend my gratitude to agencies such as NEMA and FEMA, which collaborated to save the lives of at least 37 individuals. Unfortunately, we have suffered the loss of two lives.
I appeal to the Permanent Secretary to expedite the process of raising funds for the hospital bills of those rescued, in order to prevent further casualties. This should be actioned immediately.”
Furthermore, Wike emphasized the significance of adhering to proper building regulations and codes, citing the importance of safeguarding lives and preventing incidents like this. He called for the identification and apprehension of the building’s owner.
The minister underlined the government’s commitment to assuming control over the affected area and preventing further development.
He stressed the necessity of collaboration between stakeholders and the government, emphasizing that government decisions, though at times challenging, are ultimately made in the interest of the people.
Wike concluded by expressing condolences to those who lost their lives and reiterating the government’s commitment to covering hospital expenses.
He affirmed continued support for the ongoing rescue efforts, ensuring that every individual still trapped beneath the rubble is successfully extricated.
