Ms. Shitta-Bey, represented by the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, further disclosed that 40 percent of these abused children have undergone counseling programs to help them cope with the psychological trauma they endured, with the aim of preventing long-term negative impacts.
According to Shitta-Bey, “Between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023, the agency handled a total of 5,624 cases, categorized into two groups: adults and children.
The agency now receives an average of 250 clients every month. Among adults, 91 percent of survivors were female, while 9 percent were male. In the case of children, 45 percent of survivors were boys, and 55 percent were girls.”
The report highlighted that the victims of sexual and gender-based violence faced significant emotional and psychological challenges, with 90 percent of survivors reporting experiences of low self-esteem, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), extreme fear, anxiety, and approximately five percent seeking medical assistance for depression. Additionally, some individuals, both men and women, who endured domestic violence, revealed that they lost their livelihoods as a consequence of the abuse.
