However, it is disheartening to observe how they have neglected the needs of the grassroots population and have personalized the monthly allocations they receive.
During separate meetings with the council chairmen, vice-chairmen, councilors, and senior staff of the councils, the Speaker emphasized that the Lagos Assembly has received reports indicating that many chairmen are falling short of meeting the expectations of their constituents.
Consequently, the assembly has resolved to ensure strict adherence to governance principles in the best interest of the grassroots population.
Obasa conveyed to the council chairmen and other officials, “Each council chairman must commit to a policy whereby every quarter, tangible progress must be visible to demonstrate effective governance. There should be projects that can be inaugurated.”
He stressed that if road construction is undertaken, it should not be of temporary quality but should endure, leaving a lasting positive impact on the community. The Speaker urged council officials to genuinely serve the people and make a difference in their lives.
Furthermore, the Lagos Speaker expressed that it would no longer be business as usual for the council chairmen. He criticized them for their detachment from the concerns and expectations of Lagosians at the grassroots level, particularly lamenting the absence of crucial facilities such as well-equipped maternity centers. Obasa questioned how they could sleep soundly at night while their councils failed to deliver meaningful projects within their communities in a span of six months.
