NDLEA Introduces War Against Drug Abuse Clubs In Kwara Secondary Schools

The agency plans to collaborate with schools through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) school clubs for this initiative.

This announcement was made in a statement following a town hall meeting held with secondary school principals in Ilorin.

Mr. Ibrahim Bashir, the Kwara Commander of NDLEA, emphasized the establishment of WADA Clubs as part of secondary school extracurricular activities to combat the growing issue of drug abuse among young people.

The NDLEA also disclosed its intention to deploy trained volunteers in secondary schools to oversee WADA activities and revamp programs like the ‘National Essay Competition’ to engage students in a positive manner.

The statement stressed the pivotal role of teachers in preventing drug abuse and educating students. It suggested that the Ministry of Education should make religious studies a compulsory subject for students.

Furthermore, the meeting proposed the use of modern technology, including the creation of an app, internet resources, and social media, to educate students about the harmful consequences of drug abuse.

Mr. Yahaya Aliyu, the Zonal Commander of the agency responsible for Zone ‘C,’ which includes Niger, Kogi, and Kwara States, emphasized the agency’s role in tackling drug abuse, both in terms of reducing demand and supply. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts by all stakeholders in the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).

The meeting concluded by agreeing to establish suggestion boxes in various locations, particularly in offices and schools, to gather ideas on the most effective ways to discourage young individuals from using illicit drugs and other substances.
