Olumekun clarified that Umoren would not assume office until the current REC, Monday Udo-Tom, from the state completes their tenure in January 2024.

In a discussion with Premium Times, he mentioned, “The new REC will only take up the role after the current REC’s term concludes.”

Similarly, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the spokesperson for the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, pointed out that having two RECs from the same state simultaneously is unusual.

He noted that the newly appointed REC from Akwa Ibom’s tenure would commence after the current one’s term ends in January next year.

Oyekanmi suggested that the current appointment of RECs ahead of another’s tenure ending might set a positive precedent.

He explained, “The current REC’s term from Akwa Ibom State will finish in January next year. The tenure of the new REC from the same Akwa Ibom State will only begin after the current one’s term ends.”
