Renowned author and socio-political commentator Reno Omokri recently took to Twitter to share his perspective on the impact of Peter Obi’s presidential candidacy on the political landscape. According to Omokri, Obi’s entry into the presidential race has inadvertently favored the chances of APC’s presidential candidate, President Tinubu, rather than serving the interests of the PDP. Omokri’s tweet, posted on August 24, 2022, six months before the February 24, 2023 Nigerian Presidential election, highlighted his foresight regarding the potential outcomes of Obi’s candidacy.
“I posted the below tweet on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 07:04 in the morning. This was six months before the February 24, 2023 Nigerian Presidential election.”
In his tweet, Omokri asserted that the biggest beneficiary of Peter Obi’s presidential race is President Tinubu, not the supporters of Peter Obi. He argued that Obi’s candidacy might draw votes that would have naturally gone to the PDP, including those in the Southeast, some non-Yoruba Lagos votes, a chunk of Benue votes, and a few votes in peripheral states.
“The biggest beneficiary of Peter Obi’s Presidential race is Tinubu, not Obidients. Peter won’t affect APC’s votes.”
Omokri pointed out historical voting patterns, emphasizing that the Yoruba have never voted for a non-Yoruba when a Yoruba candidate is in the race. Additionally, he noted that the Hausa and Fulani have consistently voted for a Muslim candidate, regardless of the candidate’s region.
“…the Yoruba have NEVER voted for a non Yoruba when a Yoruba is in the race… the Hausa and Fulani have only ever voted for a Muslim.”
Omokri suggested that Tinubu, being a master tactician, understands that Peter Obi cannot win. Instead, Tinubu may seek to capitalize on Obi’s candidacy by promoting it through proxies, knowing that Obi’s votes are more likely to come from the PDP.
“Tinubu is a master tactician. He knows Peter Obi cannot win. And he knows that very, very little of Peter’s votes, if any at all, will come from him.”
