Abejide called for the implementation of a House resolution requiring a 90-day notice for any policy changes. He stressed the importance of transparency to prevent investors and importers from being caught off guard by sudden policy shifts. The proposed tripartite committee would provide an open and transparent platform for dialogue on fiscal and monetary issues affecting trade. This collaborative effort is expected to lead to thorough discussions and analyses of critical decisions before their implementation, fostering a conducive environment for economic growth.
Abejide highlighted recent instances where policy changes, such as an unexpected exchange rate adjustment, had a significant impact on stakeholders. He emphasized that collaboration between the CBN, the Ministry of Finance, and the Nigeria Customs Service would contribute to a more coordinated approach to trade policies, reducing disruptions and supporting economic stability.
During the session, committee members expressed concerns about multiple checkpoints set up by the Nigeria Customs Service nationwide and called for increased collaboration with sister agencies to address smuggling. The Customs boss responded by noting the service’s efforts to work closely with border communities but highlighted the challenges posed by the lack of basic amenities in these areas. He appealed to the Federal Government to provide essential facilities in border communities to enhance the effectiveness of the Nigerian Customs Service in carrying out its duties.
