In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo made these remarks during an interaction with the 2023 awardees of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, an initiative led by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. He underscored the debts as a perilous trap that must be avoided, deeming them a burden on any economy.

Obasanjo, identifying leadership as the continent’s primary predicament, expressed his belief that future generations would inevitably bear the brunt of the accumulating debts. Commending Pastor Oyakhilome for his leadership development efforts, Obasanjo emphasized the urgency of addressing the leadership crisis in Africa and advocated for more individuals like Oyakhilome.

During a Q&A session, Obasanjo outlined key qualities of a leader, emphasizing the importance of setting good examples, bold decision-making, acknowledging mistakes, learning from them, and nurturing realistic dreams.

In a related context, Obasanjo conveyed optimism that Nigeria’s socio-economic situation could improve within the next four years through prayers and thanksgiving. Speaking at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ogun State 5th Thanksgiving service, where he was honored as the Asiwaju Onigbagbo, Ogun State, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, he acknowledged the current challenges in the country but urged gratitude for the mercy received.

Expressing faith in the potential transformation of Nigeria’s fortunes, Obasanjo urged continuous gratitude to God for every breath of free air. The event, attended by dignitaries such as Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Sen. Gbenga Daniel, and other prominent figures, celebrated Obasanjo’s leadership, recognizing him not only as a national leader but also as a global phenomenon.
