Sources revealed that upon their arrival at one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, the EFCC operatives sought documents related to the allocation of foreign exchange to the group over the last decade. After hours of scrutiny, some of the documents were confiscated.
The EFCC had previously written to 52 companies, instructing them to provide documents supporting the allocation and utilization of foreign currencies over the past 10 years. This investigation is part of a broader inquiry into alleged preferential forex allocations by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the leadership of Godwin Emefiele.
While some companies complied with the EFCC’s directive, others requested additional time to gather information and documents. In a surprising turn of events, the EFCC raided the Dangote Group’s headquarters on the same day the company attempted to submit boxes of documents to the anti-graft agency.
Despite the Dangote Group’s cooperation, the EFCC insisted on collecting the documents at the company’s premises. This approach has raised concerns about unnecessary displays of force, potentially discouraging foreign investors from considering Nigeria as a viable investment destination.
As the situation unfolds, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, declined to comment on the matter. Similarly, attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
