As of August 8, 2023, Nigeria ranked highest globally in unemployment rates, standing at 33.3%, as per statistics from the World of Statistics. South Africa followed closely at 32.9%, and Iran at 15.55%. In contrast, countries like Qatar, Cambodia, and Niger reported significantly lower unemployment rates at 0.1%, 0.36%, and 0.5%, respectively.

A December 21, 2023 report by The BUSHRAFDIOGIST highlighted a rise in youth unemployment to 7.2% in the second quarter of 2023, compared to 6.9% in the preceding quarter.

During a courtesy visit by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Beta Edu, emphasized that the proposed recruitment aimed to enhance humanitarian response times. Edu explained that the ministry plans to hire temporary humanitarian aid workers who will be deployed to locations facing crises. This strategic move not only addresses unemployment concerns but also improves the efficiency and quality of response.

Edu revealed that the initial employment period would be three months, with the possibility of extension to six months or a maximum of one year if the crisis persists. She emphasized the preference for individuals with skills and experience in handling humanitarian crisis situations.

To ensure inclusiveness, Edu announced that interested applicants could submit written applications to the Department of Humanitarian Affairs or apply online, with the application process being free of charge. The portal link for online applications would be publicized shortly.

In response to the initiative, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, represented by the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Wapkerem Maigida, pledged the Nigerian Air Force’s support. He assured that NAF personnel would collaborate with the ministry to transport humanitarian aid workers and relief materials to states and hinterlands in need. Abubakar highlighted the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to providing both security and humanitarian support to communities in collaboration with relevant government agencies.
