The defendants, Aliyu Adamu (24), Ahmed Musa (18), and Adamu Aliyu (21), residents of Malamre Yola, pleaded guilty and sought leniency during their trial before Chief Magistrate Musa Adamu.

Chief Magistrate Musa Adamu, in delivering the judgment, considered the gravity of the crime and its societal implications. He expressed his disdain for actions that involve groups breaking into homes at night, causing theft, threats, and instilling fear in people.

As a result, Aliyu Adamu, Ahmed Musa, and Adamu Aliyu were each sentenced to six months in prison for criminal conspiracy or a fine of N50,000. Additionally, they received sentences of 10 years, seven years, and five years imprisonment, respectively, without the option of a fine for the theft in a dwelling house charge. These sentences would run concurrently.

Chief Magistrate Adamu granted the convicts a 30-day window for the right of appeal or to serve their sentences.

During the trial, the Police Prosecutor, Insp Galion Neron, outlined that the defendants faced a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft. The incident occurred on December 20, 2023, around 4:00 p.m., when the complainant, Mamoud Yahaya of Malamre, reported the matter at Karewa Police Station in Yola.

The accused individuals were said to have conspired to break into the complainant’s brother’s house, Isah Yahaya, in Malamre, and stole various items, including a black Samsung television valued at N100,000, 10 perfumes valued at N200,000, three caps valued at N60,000, underwear valued at N10,000, clothes valued at N300,000, and two international passports, among other items.

The prosecutor revealed that, during the police investigation, the suspects admitted to the crime, and some of the stolen items were recovered from their possession. The charges brought against them were in violation of sections 60 and 279 of the Penal Code of Adamawa 2018.
