Mrs. Tina Raphael, a 60-year-old woman from Anambra State, has been apprehended by the Gombe State Police Command on suspicion of child trafficking. Raphael, who expressed a desire to have a girl-child, explained that she adopted a one-year-old baby from a suspected trafficker named Khadijah for N400,000. She claimed that she was motivated by the baby’s poor health due to malnutrition and wanted to provide medical assistance……..CONTINUE READING
According to Raphael, she approached Khadijah, who worked in the social welfare department of the Ministry of Women Affairs, to help her obtain legal custody papers for the child. She insisted that she did not buy the baby with the money but was waiting for the legal documents to be handed over.
In a similar case, Ukamaka Ugo, another resident of Gombe from Anambra State, was arrested for her involvement in baby racketeering. Ugo claimed innocence and stated that Khadijah promised to let her have a baby for a fee when they met in a market. She explained that she paid N50,000 for baby items and the child’s needs after Khadijah informed her about a mother who couldn’t afford to care for her newborn.
Ugo asserted that the child was not sold, and the money she paid included expenses for the baby’s medication. She believed she was dealing with the right person since Khadijah claimed to work with the social welfare office.
However, the family of the baby denied selling their child to Ugo, and the father revealed that they involved the police when Khadijah’s actions became suspicious.
Khadijah, the prime suspect, denied allegations of child theft and trafficking. She stated that she only connected individuals with the social welfare office and did not forcibly take children from their families. Khadijah claimed that the children involved had parents who were unable to care for them, and she facilitated support and care for their well-being.
The investigation into these cases continues as authorities work to determine the true circumstances surrounding the adoption and custody of the children in question.
