The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has expressed deep concern over the escalating prevalence of roadblocks and extortion activities in the South-East, deeming it a pressing issue for both the organization and the entire region. Okeke-Ogene lamented the persistence of security operatives, donned in various security uniforms, who continue to set up roadblocks throughout the region primarily for the purpose of extorting money from motorists, rather than fulfilling legitimate security duties. He cited a specific example of the Onitsha to Ekwulobia road, where more than 10 roadblocks were established to extract varying sums of money from motorists based on the time of day. He emphasized that the revenue generated from these roadblocks could be substantial enough to fund the construction of a third Niger Bridge in the region.
The Vice President drew attention to the historical context, noting that the Association of Past Presidents General of Anambra State and the Association of Anambra State Town Union (ASATU) were established in response to the maltreatment faced by the people during military administration, including harassment, intimidation, and extortion. Okeke-Ogene underscored the alarming increase in roadblocks, extending even into residential areas, and expressed concern that this issue was not receiving adequate attention.
He remarked, “Today, the roadblocks have increased, even to residential areas, and nobody is talking. The level of extortions at these roadblocks is enough to build a third Niger Bridge. You can’t imagine how much they make from those roadblocks. And these are done by intimidation, not voluntary. We must continue to fight against it.”
The statement serves as a call to action against the proliferation of unauthorized roadblocks and the exploitation of motorists, highlighting the need for collective efforts to address this pressing issue in the South-East region.
