The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information Communication Technology, ICT, and Cyber Security, Stanley Olajide, announced that President Bola Tinubu has tasked the National Assembly with the responsibility of digitizing public services across the nation, including those within the National Assembly. Olajide emphasized the transformative impact of technology on public services, highlighting that many aspects of public service would undergo digitization in the upcoming months and years. He acknowledged the potential risks associated with data collection and sharing, emphasizing the need for government agencies to safeguard data appropriately. To address this concern, he outlined the role of NDPC in data protection, while Galaxy Back Bone, GBB, would be responsible for managing the data exchange system in accordance with NDPC guidelines.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, stressed the ubiquitous nature of technology in contemporary society. He urged both public and private sectors to prioritize the protection of citizens’ personal data, emphasizing the crucial role of companies in developing digital products that ensure data security without compromising privacy.

Tijani called for an awareness campaign on data protection, involving government institutions, civil society organizations, and the media. He emphasized the importance of enlightening citizens about data privacy and fostering behavioral change.

Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, highlighted the commission’s efforts in handling complaints and investigations related to data privacy. He revealed that over 1,000 complaints had been received, with 50 verified cases currently under investigation across various sectors. Olatunji also noted the increase in Data Protection Compliance Organizations and annual audit filings, contributing to a cumulative revenue estimate of 6.2 billion and the creation of approximately 10,100 jobs.

Olatunji issued a stern warning against treating Nigerians as second-class citizens in terms of data privacy and stressed the need for cooperation among data owners and users to prevent criminal exploitation of personal data. He concluded by emphasizing the collective responsibility to secure Nigeria’s present and future in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
