An official confirmed, “Yes, the plan is still on, and they will resume work by February 2, the first week of next month.”
This move comes against the backdrop of the new management’s decision to relocate certain CBN departments to Lagos, the country’s economic hub. The objectives include enhancing staff safety, boosting productivity, and alleviating congestion at the head office.
The CBN explained that this decision was driven by various factors, such as aligning the bank’s structure with its functions and objectives, redistributing skills for a more even geographical spread of talent, and ensuring compliance with building regulations based on warnings from the facility manager and recommendations from the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office.
A memo issued to staff articulated, “This is to notify all staff members at the CBN Head Office that we have initiated a decongestion action plan designed to optimize the operational environment of the Bank. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilization of our office space.”
Reportedly, departments like Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection Department, Payment System Management Department, and Financial Policy Regulations Department are earmarked for relocation by CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso.
Despite criticisms from Northern Elders Forum and other Northern groups, the CBN governor is resolute in implementing this move, anticipating a reduction in HQ occupancy from 4,233 personnel to 2,733.
Some of the affected staff members have already initiated the relocation process. A source revealed, “Some have already gone ahead. Over 80 per cent of the Banking Supervision Department staff have been redeployed, and the same for the Payment System Department.”
