An official within the apex bank confirmed that despite criticism, the plan is proceeding, and the affected staff members are expected to resume work on February 2.
The decision to relocate certain CBN departments to Lagos was made by the new management to ensure staff safety, enhance productivity, and alleviate congestion at the head office. The move is aligned with the bank’s objective of optimizing its structure and redistributing skills for a more balanced geographic talent spread.
The initiative is also in compliance with building regulations, responding to warnings from the facility manager and recommendations from the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office.
A memo issued to staff outlined the purpose: “This is to notify all staff members at the CBN Head Office that we have initiated a decongestion action plan designed to optimize the operational environment of the Bank.”
CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso identified departments for relocation, including Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection Department, Payment System Management Department, and Financial Policy Regulations Department.
Despite opposition from groups like the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and Northern senators, the CBN governor remains committed to the plan. The NEF expressed concerns about increased costs, talent loss, operational disruptions, reduced coordination, economic disparities, and potential damage to Northern Nigeria’s development.
Sources indicate that some affected staff members have already started relocating to Lagos, with over 80% of the Banking Supervision Department staff and the Payment System Department staff being redeployed.
Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, warned of potential political consequences and criticized those advocating for the relocation, emphasizing the impact on the nation’s economy and investor confidence.
As the plan progresses, it continues to generate mixed reactions and concerns from various quarters, highlighting the broader implications of the CBN’s decision to relocate key departments to Lagos.
