A tragic incident occurred in Borno State near the border with Cameroon, where at least 12 loggers lost their lives when their vehicle hit a landmine. This area is known for the presence of Boko Haram jihadists, who are active despite the efforts to curb their insurgency. CONTINUE READING
According to reports from two non-government organizations working in the area, the loggers were on their way to collect firewood in the bush when their flat-bed vehicle rolled over a suspected landmine planted by Boko Haram on the highway outside Pulka village. The incident took place on Monday, resulting in the death of 12 people and injuries to several others.
Northeast Nigeria has been a hotspot for a prolonged jihadist insurgency, with Boko Haram targeting rural areas even after losing control of significant territories. The insurgents are known to plant explosive devices, and the recent surge in mine explosions targeting civilian convoys has been attributed to jihadist activities.
Reports state that the suspected Boko Haram militants planted the explosive device that killed the loggers along the Pulka to Gwoza route. Another report indicates that seven loggers were injured, with three in critical condition, requiring evacuation to Maiduguri for further medical attention.
The security forces in Nigeria have not officially confirmed the blast, but the incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region. Gwoza, where the jihadists once established their so-called caliphate, was retaken by Nigerian troops in 2015. However, the militants continue to operate in the mountains along the border with Cameroon, conducting raids on nearby villages.
Residents in the area have been forced to seek refuge in camps under military protection, with troops conducting patrols to deter militants from targeting civilians, especially those venturing into the bush for activities like collecting firewood and fruits. Boko Haram and its rival, the Islamic State West Africa Province, often target loggers, farmers, and herders, accusing them of collaborating with security forces and anti-jihadist militias.
The insurgency initiated by Boko Haram in 2009 has resulted in the loss of over 40,000 lives and displaced more than two million people. The conflict has extended into neighboring countries like Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, leading to the creation of a regional military force to combat the militants.
