Speaking at a Capacity Building and Empowerment event organized by the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) and the National Assembly in Port Harcourt, Nnamonu highlighted the failure of regulatory agencies to enforce established chemical use laws. This negligence, she stated, is costing the nation foreign exchange.

Nnamonu emphasized that the misuse, abuse, and incorrect application of pesticides and preservatives by farmers contribute to recurring incidents of food poisoning in Nigeria. She pointed out that farm products from the country often exceed the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) set by the World Health Organization (WHO), resulting in rejection by international markets.

The professor cited a specific example of yam production in Benue State, where a franchise to export yams to Europe and the Americas was hindered by high pesticide residues during quality checks.

Nnamonu urged the government and regulatory agencies to take immediate action to address the issue. She called for increased monitoring of farmers and the implementation of existing laws to ensure compliance. She emphasized the importance of educating farmers about proper chemical usage to prevent further rejections of agricultural exports.
