How would you define the concept of first fruit offerings?
The first fruit offering represents the initial harvest or gains obtained at the commencement of a new agricultural cycle or business venture. Exodus 23:16 in the Bible emphasizes this, stating, “The feast of harvest, the first fruit of your labour, which you have sown in the field.” In ancient times, when individuals cultivated new fields, they would plant crops like corn, yam, barley, or wheat. Upon the fruition of the crops, the very first harvest—whether it be three, four, or a sheaf—was gathered and offered to the Lord. This act served as a gesture of gratitude and acknowledgment, recognizing God’s role in providing the yield from the land.
This offering symbolizes thanksgiving and appreciation, with the biblical promise that putting God first in this manner ensures the success of the remaining harvest and the prosperity of the entire yield during the harvest season. In those times, factors such as locusts, blight, or unfavorable weather conditions could threaten the rest of the harvest. However, by presenting the first fruits to God, believers believed that He would safeguard the rest of the harvest, which now belonged to them. This understanding sheds light on the significance of the first fruit offering.
How can we apply this ancient practice to our contemporary lives?
In the modern era, it is recommended that individuals consider their first salary or the initial income generated from a business venture as their first fruit. By presenting this income to the Lord, believers seek to secure the success and prosperity of their overall earnings for the year. Another aspect of the first fruit concept involves recognizing any increase in one’s regular yields. For instance, if someone typically harvests 10 tubers of yam and suddenly begins to yield 12 tubers regularly, the first two additional tubers are considered as the first fruit of that increase. Similarly, in the context of a salary increase from N100,000 to N150,000, the extra N50,000 received for the first time becomes the first fruit of that increase.
This modern adaptation aims to ensure the continuity and prosperity of any increase, aligning with biblical and spiritual principles. Thus, the concept of first fruits retains its relevance in contemporary life, emphasizing gratitude, acknowledgment, and the commitment to putting God first in our financial endeavors.
