Eze made these remarks in response to statements attributed to All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Ganduje was reportedly quoted as saying, “We work day and night to visualize Kano as a one-party state.”
Eze emphasized that the successful implementation of a single-party system in Nigeria could jeopardize the nation’s sovereignty, marking the formal collapse of democracy. He lamented the current state of the Nigerian political landscape, describing it as an arena where those in power aim to perpetuate their rule, regardless of the negative impact on the well-being of the governed.
Drawing on historical examples, Eze pointed out the danger associated with imperial sentiments in politics. He condemned the reminiscent mentality expressed by the late Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, the former National Chairman of the PDP, 16 years ago.
Referring to this historical context, Eze stated, “Ganduje is not the first to voice such imperial sentiments. Sixteen years ago, the then National Chairman of the PDP, the late Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, boasted that his party would keep national power for 60 years. It was the stand of individuals like Ogbulafor that led patriotic Nigerians to exile the PDP from governance. Unfortunately, the party we struggled to install is now adopting a similar mindset.”
Eze argued that such a move towards a one-party state would be unfair to those who risked their lives to bring the APC into power, with the hope of establishing not only a progressive political party but also one capable of addressing the challenges of poverty and insecurity. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of humility in politics, advocating for the recognition that no single party possesses all the answers, and cooperation is a sign of progress, not treachery.
