The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, revealed this development in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting that the suspects—Musa Gideon, Abdul Adamu, and Justine Musa—were arrested on Yakubu Gowon Way, Kaduna, while attempting to sell new Naira notes to an undercover EFCC operative.
Oyewale explained that the undercover operative, a member of the Special Task Force established by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to enforce laws against currency mutilation and the dollarization of the economy, executed a sting operation leading to the arrest. The operation uncovered the sale of both new and old Naira notes totaling N1,307,400, along with numerous Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.
Upon concluding investigations, the suspects will face charges in court, as part of the EFCC’s intensified efforts to combat currency-related offenses amid the devaluation of the Naira.
In response to the declining value of the Naira, the EFCC has deployed a Special Task Force across its commands to crack down on individuals involved in mutilating the currency and dollarizing the Nigerian economy.
Oyewale also disclosed that the EFCC has arrested perpetrators in Lagos and Rivers States involved in issuing invoices in dollars and mutilating the Naira. He emphasized the formation of the Special Task Force across Zonal Commands to uphold existing laws against currency mutilation and dollarization.
The EFCC Chairman, Olukoyede, recently held discussions with the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso, to address foreign exchange issues contributing to the continuous depreciation of the Naira. This collaborative effort aims to combat foreign exchange fraud, particularly involving Bureau De Change operators. The EFCC remains dedicated to enforcing all relevant laws to safeguard the economy from abuse and instability.
