The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, unveiled this initiative during the opening ceremony of the 30th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation. In his keynote address themed ‘People, Planet, and Prosperity: Promoting Water Governance for National Food Security,’ he emphasized the critical role of irrigated agriculture in driving economic growth, poverty alleviation, and food security.

Highlighting the significance of the allocation, Utsev underscored the importance of providing farmers with access to land for cultivation, particularly in irrigated areas. He emphasized that irrigated agricultural practices have been identified as crucial for Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and serving as a viable intervention for poverty alleviation and national food security.

The allocated land, totaling 15,000 hectares, will be handed over to farmers by the end of the third quarter of the year 2024. This move aligns with the Ministry’s commitment to achieving the target of developing 500,000 hectares of land by 2030, as part of the government’s broader agenda for agricultural transformation and economic development.

The initiative is expected to empower farmers with the resources and opportunities needed to increase agricultural productivity, enhance food self-sufficiency, and mitigate the impact of high food prices on consumers. By providing farmers with access to irrigable land, the Ministry aims to create a conducive environment for sustainable farming practices, technological innovation, and inclusive growth in the agricultural sector.

Moreover, the allocation of land to farmers underscores the government’s commitment to promoting public-private partnerships (PPP) and collaborative efforts to address key challenges facing the agricultural sector. It reflects a proactive approach to leveraging available resources, fostering innovation, and driving socio-economic development through agriculture.

As the Ministry continues to prioritize water governance, sanitation, and food security, the allocation of 15,000 hectares of land marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable agricultural development and ensuring a more resilient and food-secure future for Nigeria.
