Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a two-day high-level strategic meeting on climate change, food systems, and resource mobilization held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Shettima explained that the proposed board would be tasked with evaluating and regulating food prices and maintaining a strategic food reserve to stabilize the prices of essential grains and other food items.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the potential food crisis through immediate, medium, and long-term strategies. These strategies include revitalizing food supply through specific interventions such as distributing fertilizers and grains to farmers and households, fostering collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources for efficient farmland irrigation, and establishing a National Commodity Board to address price volatility.
Additionally, the government aims to restore degraded lands and activate land banks to increase the availability of arable land for farming. Mechanization companies will be engaged to clear more forests for farming, and the Central Bank of Nigeria will continue to play a major role in funding the agricultural value chain.
The administration also plans to make agriculture attractive to the youth population, with the aim of creating between 5 to 10 million more jobs within the agriculture value chain. These efforts align with the UN-Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union Agenda 2063.
During the meeting, stakeholders discussed the urgent action required to address the food shortage problem in Nigeria. They emphasized the need for strong regional integration, boosting productivity, and economic growth rates through the right policies and governance objectives.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including members of the Senate Committee, representatives of governors, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
