Despite concerns from stakeholders, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, regarding the proliferation of institutions amidst poor funding for existing ones, Maiyaki defended the decision to establish new universities, stating that massification of universities is a deliberate policy. He highlighted the challenges faced by families and university leaders due to the limited admission slots available.
Maiyaki acknowledged the importance of investing in education and mentioned that the approval for two additional universities, bringing the total to 272, will be announced soon. He argued that expanding access to education is crucial and cited examples from countries like Brazil and Indonesia, which have more than 1,000 universities with smaller populations than Nigeria.
In an effort to enhance the education system, the NUC is also exploring transnational education by allowing foreign universities to operate in the country. Additionally, the commission is processing applications for the establishment of monitored distance learning centers to provide quality education.
Responding to allegations of private universities charging tuition fees in dollars, Maiyaki clarified that no Nigerian tertiary institution is allowed to charge fees in dollars, except for foreign students. The NUC investigated the claims and found that the mentioned private university only charged dollars to foreign students.
In conclusion, Maiyaki urged the media to collaborate in spreading the information that no Nigerian university is permitted to charge fees in dollars. The NUC remains committed to widening access to universities and ensuring the delivery of quality education in Nigeria.
