Ngozi Nwibo, a seven-year-old victim, was rescued on January 4, 2024, in Oba, Idemili L.G.A. of Anambra State. The female kidnapper was apprehended and brought to the Ebonyi State Police Command Headquarters in Abakaliki. Following her confession, she was taken to Lagos State, where the second victim, three-year-old Chinaza Nwachukwu, was also rescued. However, the woman who purchased Chinaza managed to escape arrest.
Amidst celebrations at their residence, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Nwachukwu, parents of Chinaza Nwachukwu, expressed immense gratitude to God for the safe return of their kidnapped daughter. Despite the financial strain incurred during the police investigation and recovery process, Mr. Nwachukwu emphasized that no cost outweighs the value of their child’s life. He urged the wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, and relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served, setting an example for potential perpetrators.
The Nwibo family, parents of Ngozi Nwibo, also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends, relatives, and well-wishers during their challenging period.
Mr. Francis Nwankwuda, the landlord who unknowingly accommodated the lady kidnapper posing as an NYSC member, rejoiced over the rescue of the kidnapped children. He thanked God for being vindicated after over two weeks of detention during the police investigation.
In attendance was Mr. Sebastine Obiya, a teacher at the Special Science School Igbeagu, who advised parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children. He further urged landlords and caretakers to verify the identity of potential tenants before providing accommodation.
The incident, which occurred on January 22, 2024, involved a lady posing as a Corps member named Mercy Francis (fake name). She rented accommodation from a landlord, played videos to the children, and later lured them away under the pretext of buying a recharge card. The parents reported the incident to the police, leading to a three-week investigation that resulted in the safe recovery of the children, who were found to be in good health.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command Headquarters, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the heartening news when contacted.
