NARTO President Reveals Reasons Behind Petroleum Tanker Drivers Ending Strike....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Yusuf Lawal, the President of the Association of Road Transport Owners, announced on Friday that the union has suspended its industrial action, attributing the decision to the intervention of the Federal Government. Lawal emphasized that the union is facing financial challenges due to the removal of subsidy and the escalating cost of the dollar.
During a meeting in Abuja with the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), NARTO, and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Lawal, represented by the Union’s Coordinator of National Operations, Kassim Bataiya, underscored the essential role of truck drivers in the petroleum products supply chain.
Bataiya elucidated that the movement of petroleum products relies heavily on petroleum tankers and trucks, making the roads congested and susceptible to constant damage. He expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition for their services by both the Federal Government and the citizens.
Providing a practical example, Bataiya revealed the financial strain faced by transporters, citing a scenario where they are paid N30 per litre to transport Petroleum Motor Spirit from Lagos to the NNPC depot in Suleja. He highlighted the considerable operational costs, including diesel expenses, withholding tax, and the challenges of import-dependent components.
Furthermore, Bataiya outlined the operational challenges faced by transporters in Nigeria, including the high costs of vehicle maintenance, spare parts, road conditions, and insecurity. He emphasized the need for the Federal Government to implement policies to alleviate the difficulties faced by truck drivers in the country.
