[BREAKING] TUC Urges Federal Government To Initiate Food Imports Amid Economic Strain

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to address the surging food prices in the country by initiating food importation within a two-week timeframe. TUC President, Festus Osifo, expressed concerns about the unprecedented economic hardship, attributing it to the government’s inadequate support for local products and services and a lack of competent leadership.

Osifo emphasized the need for a temporary relaxation of the national drive for food sufficiency, suggesting that governments at all levels should promptly procure substantial quantities of food globally and distribute them to vulnerable Nigerians. He argued that allowing the importation of food would help alleviate the hyper-inflation of food prices in the country.

In addition, Osifo advised President Bola Tinubu to urgently strengthen the economic management team and transcend political and tribal affiliations in selecting capable individuals globally. The goal is to assemble a team capable of developing domestic solutions to the ongoing economic challenges.

The TUC’s proposal underscores the urgency of addressing the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians and calls for a pragmatic approach to tackle the soaring food prices.
