The Senate has called upon the Police Service Commission (PSC) to recruit a minimum of 10 candidates from each of the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country. Sen. Memga highlighted that the Buhari administration had directed the annual recruitment of 10,000 constables to address the prevailing security challenges in the nation. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu was committed to implementing this policy, emphasizing that recruitment should be executed based on the individual strengths of each LGA, particularly in the context of community policing.
The senator justified the use of LGA parameters in the recruitment process, citing the need to adhere to the principles of federal character outlined in section 14 (3) of the 1999 constitution, as amended. He asserted that this approach aims to promote inclusivity, representation, a sense of belonging, and balance in the political landscape.
“The use of LGA parameters in the recruitment exercise is to reflect the principles of the federal character. It is also meant to promote inclusion, representation give a sense of belonging and balance in the polity; section 14 (3) of the 1999 constitution as amended, captured the federal character,” Sen. Memga explained.
He stressed that adopting state parameters instead of LGAs would lead to inequality and emphasized the importance of fair representation for all local government areas in recruitment processes.
This move is seen as a step towards promoting national unity, fostering loyalty, and preventing the marginalization of any state, ethnic group, or community in government or its agencies.
