During a meeting with state commissioners of energy in Abuja, Chief Adelabu assured that the era of irregular power supply in the country would soon come to an end. This commitment comes as the nation’s power generation hits a record low due to gas suppliers limiting the supply over a $1.2 billion debt issue.
According to a statement by Mr Bolaji Tunji, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, the government plans to collaborate with state governments to enhance power supply. Chief Adelabu emphasized that with the implemented efforts to tackle sector challenges, Nigerians should exercise patience as irregular power supply is anticipated to be eradicated in the near future.
Addressing the forum attended by representatives from 23 states, Chief Adelabu highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of electricity challenges, emphasizing that past solutions were often temporary without tackling the underlying issues.
Encouraging state governments to leverage the new Electricity Act, Chief Adelabu noted that the act fosters unity in diversity and urged federal and state governments to work hand-in-hand. He promised to support states that actively engage in power-related initiatives, indicating that their success would be a testament to his own performance.
The Minister cited the example of Abia State, where Geometrics Power Limited has successfully established a 188-megawatt power generating plant, providing 24-hour power supply to several local government areas. He encouraged other states to adopt similar models and underscored the significance of state involvement in distribution networks and addressing the meter gap.
Prince Eka Williams, the Chairman of the Forum and Commissioner of Power and Energy in Cross River State, reiterated the states’ unwavering support for the federal government’s electricity reforms, emphasizing the responsibilities bestowed upon states by the Electricity Act.
In conclusion, Chief Adelabu expressed optimism that through diligence and perseverance, achieving consistent and improved power supply, similar to the success in Abia State, is attainable for other states as well.
