Opay’s Troubling Trend: Emerging As Top Hub For Hackers And Scammers As Nigerian Users Continue To Lose Funds Amid National Economic Turmoil....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In the era of burgeoning financial technology (fintech), the narrative of convenience and security has been hijacked by a disconcerting reality: the prevalence of cyber insecurity. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Opay, a prominent digital bank, which has increasingly become a playground for hackers and scammers, leaving its users vulnerable to substantial financial losses.

Recent months have witnessed a surge in reports detailing the harrowing experiences of Opay customers who have fallen prey to cybercriminals. These incidents paint a bleak picture of a platform marred by systemic vulnerabilities, where hackers can exploit security flaws to gain unauthorized access to users’ accounts and pilfer funds with impunity.

Despite assurances from Opay regarding the robustness of its security measures, the evidence speaks for itself: the frequency and severity of these breaches indicate a glaring failure on the part of the company to safeguard its users’ sensitive information and assets adequately.

One such victim, Iroghama Igbinosun, shared a chilling account of his ordeal with our reporter at Bushradiogist. While he slept peacefully, unaware of the impending threat, cybercriminals executed multiple unauthorized transactions from his Opay account to another Palmpay account, orchestrated by an individual identified as Thomas Abubakar David. What’s particularly alarming is that Iroghama’s account can’t make transfers without an Opay card, yet the hacker managed to siphon off a substantial sum of ₦77,000 without such authentication.

This case is not an isolated incident; it merely scratches the surface of a pervasive problem plaguing Opay users. Our investigation at Bushradiogist has uncovered a pattern of security lapses within the platform, turning it into a breeding ground for scammers and hackers alike.

Take a look at the experiences of other victims and their evidence; walk with me and pay close attention

Bright Udoh on the 2nd of April last year took to her X handle to share her experience stating: “Dear @cenbank, @sterlingbank.ng @opayMy Opay account was hacked on the 18th March 2023 and 73,000 naira was removed from my opay account (7015450018— Bright Okon Udoh) to a Sterling Bank account (8528666918— PayDay-Peter Wodi FLW) and normally I always get alert from.. My email or normal message whenever I make transactions from my opay account but that day no message or email of that transaction was sent to me, which I find suspicious and Sterling bank has refused to respond to the emails sent by my Opay bank to theirs since that Saturday and there was a branch I went to at ikeja, one of the desk worker denied the account saying it wasn’t a Sterling bank account which is also suspicious, I have tried to get positive response from this two ends but still got nothing to start with….I would really appreciate if CBN.”

Olaide Olamilekan on the 25th of November last year, took to his X handle to share his experience, stating: “some one hacked into my brother’s opay and took all his money, quickly do something about it please.”

Safyan, yet another user of the fintech bank revealed via his Twitter account: “Someone hacked into my @OPay_NGand transferred all the money to his own Account, thought Opay is Secured?.”

Big Timz a famous account on Twitter on the 22nd of December last year revealed his painful experience with Opay: “It’s over 2 days that I tried to do a sim swap with @AirtelNigeriaafter someone hacked my@OPay_NGaccount and Airtel has not been able to swap a sim successfully. I’ve been to their branch three times in less than 24 hours and I’m still wondering how difficult it is to fix this mess. I’m totally exhausted.”

On the 11 of September last year, a Twitter user opened up, stating he said: “Woke up to realized my Opay have been hacked. Man wiped all the money there and left crumbles  I can’t even feel any pain… to those of you glorifying scam in this country… what i know is na turn by turn.”

Another Twitter influencer, Bella shared her experience: “My opay account was hacked last night. This is not a great weekend. 2 transactions to the same account last night and I got no alert notifications.”

What is even more alarming about all these is the fact that the management of the company has failed to compensate/reach out to their loyal customers who have fallen victim to this travesty despite it being unmistakably the fault of the Opay management.

Furthermore, regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies must intensify their oversight of fintech companies to ensure adherence to security standards and hold responsible those found derelict in safeguarding user data.
