The 2023 Presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed his admiration for the invaluable contributions of women to Nigeria’s development on this year’s International Women’s Day, March 8. Taking to his official social media handle, Obi celebrated women globally for their resilience and unwavering sacrifices, particularly acknowledging Nigerian women for their significant impact on the nation’s growth.
In a heartfelt message, the former Governor of Anambra State highlighted the importance of women in procreation and praised Nigerian women for their resilience, perseverance, and sacrifices amid the challenges facing the nation. Obi emphasized the need for empowering women, citing statistics that reveal women make up 49.4 percent of Nigeria’s population and stressing that their empowerment could significantly contribute to national development.
Drawing attention to the critical role of education, Obi expressed concern over the low female school enrollment in Nigeria, with 50 percent of Nigerian girls not attending school at the basic level, according to UNICEF reports. He called for addressing these challenges to empower a generation of productive women committed to national development, peace, and progress.
Advocating for greater inclusion of women in governance, Obi highlighted the need for increased political participation by women, especially in light of the National Gender Policy’s call for 35 percent women involvement in all governance processes. He pointed out that in the 2023 elections, only about 10 percent of over 15,000 candidates were women, emphasizing the importance of giving more women opportunities to play active roles in governance.
Finally, Peter Obi praised the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerian women, urging support and encouragement for their economic endeavors. Noting that women account for 41 percent of micro-business ownership in Nigeria, with approximately 23 million female entrepreneurs in the SME sector, Obi stressed that with adequate support, women could significantly contribute to the nation’s shift from consumption to production.
