The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently intercepted an illicit drug consignment concealed within the engine compartment of an interstate commercial bus. Two individuals, identified as grandfathers, were apprehended for their involvement in drug trafficking. The agency’s Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, released a statement on Sunday detailing the operation.
During a stop and search operation along the Gbongan – Ibadan road in Osun state on Thursday, March 7, NDLEA officers discovered approximately 5.2kg of cannabis sativa and opioids hidden in the engine compartment of a commercial bus bearing the registration VDY 187 XA. The bus driver, 35-year-old Iorliam Sughnen Dominic, admitted to the concealment and was taken into custody for further investigation.
In another operation on Wednesday, March 6, 26-year-old Obasanmi Esther Iyanu, a skuchies producer and distributor, was arrested in Osogbo, the Osun state capital. A raid on her hideout resulted in the recovery of 16.5 litres of the illicit substance, along with various quantities of molly and cannabis.
The NDLEA also reported the arrests of a 70-year-old grandfather, Mallam Mai Gemu Adam, and a 65-year-old, Yamama Musa, for drug trafficking in Borno state. They were apprehended alongside 24-year-old Abubakar Ya’u and 28-year-old Babagana Abubakar Ali, with the seizure of 32,000 ampoules of tramadol injection.
Furthermore, the agency’s operatives intercepted a Golf 3 salon car in Yobe state, heading to Niger Republic with 40 blocks of cannabis. Additionally, 42 cartons containing 8,400 bottles of codeine syrup were recovered from a driver, Mutari Ya’u, in Kaduna.
In separate operations in Kano, Lagos, the FCT, Plateau, and Kogi states, NDLEA officers arrested individuals involved in drug-related activities, confiscating various quantities of cannabis, codeine syrup, skuchies, and tramadol.
The NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the efforts of the agency’s commands nationwide and urged them to continue intensifying both drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction activities. The NDLEA has also engaged in advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) in schools, markets, worship centers, and communities across the country.
