The Ogun State Government launched a remarkable initiative on Wednesday, commencing the distribution of N10,000 cash awards to 100,000 primary and secondary school students across more than 2,000 public schools throughout the state’s four divisions. This initiative fulfills the promise made by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to support indigent pupils and students within the state’s educational system.

During the disbursement process observed in several schools in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, highlighted the significance of this payment as a strategy to alleviate the economic challenges faced by parents due to the prevailing economic conditions in the country. This gesture aims to provide relief to both pupils and their families.

Prof. Arigbabu emphasized the innovative approach undertaken by the governor, utilizing the education sector as a channel to reach out to those in need, recognizing its vital role in directly impacting the populace. With over 2,000 primary and secondary schools across the state, approximately 100,000 students will benefit from this support.

To ensure the funds reach the intended recipients, the government opted to channel the payments through parents of students attending public primary and secondary schools, as many of the students do not possess bank accounts due to their age. This method facilitates direct support to families in meeting their children’s educational needs.

Regarding the selection process, Prof. Arigbabu affirmed its objectivity, with teachers tasked with identifying indigent students within their respective schools. These educators, being closely connected with the students, are best positioned to recognize those facing economic hardship, evident through indicators such as lack of adequate clothing, school supplies, and other essentials.

Furthermore, the commissioner disclosed plans to extend support to 50,000 students of Ogun State origin enrolled in both public and private tertiary institutions, each to receive N50,000. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering educational advancement and easing financial burdens on students pursuing higher education.

Additionally, Prof. Arigbabu announced the provision of five exercise books to 850,000 primary and secondary school learners, inclusive of those not eligible for the cash award. He reassured the public of ongoing efforts by the governor to further enhance the education sector.

The sentiments echoed by stakeholders, including school principals, parents, and beneficiaries, underscored the profound impact of Governor Abiodun’s initiative. Their testimonials highlighted the tangible difference these funds would make in addressing students’ needs and easing financial constraints on families.

Overall, the commencement of cash awards distribution reflects the government’s proactive measures to support education and alleviate socioeconomic challenges faced by families in Ogun State.
