The Edo State House of Assembly has directed Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the Chief Judge of the state, to form a seven-member panel to investigate allegations against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. The assembly accuses Shaibu of misconduct and unauthorized disclosure of sensitive government information.
This panel has been tasked with conducting a thorough inquiry into the allegations and presenting appropriate recommendations. The assembly’s decision was made during a brief meeting chaired by Speaker RT Hon Blessing Agbebaku.
It’s worth noting that the assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against Shaibu recently, citing breaches of the constitution. However, Shaibu denies receiving any impeachment notice, contesting Speaker Agbebaku’s claim that he was served during a plenary session. Shaibu’s Personal Assistant, Charles Olubayo, in a letter dated March 12, 2024, addressed to the Speaker, refuted the assertion, stating that Shaibu had been out of the state since March 3, making it impossible for him to have received any notice.
Supporters of Shaibu believe that the allegations against him are politically motivated, particularly due to his expressed interest in succeeding Governor Godwin Obaseki. It’s noteworthy that Shaibu emerged as a gubernatorial candidate in a parallel primary election held on February 22, 2024.
