The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated an inter-agency task force to tackle the issue of overloaded trailers, marking the commencement of operations along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway on Saturday.

Inaugurated by the Corps Marshal, Mr. Dauda Biu at the Kakau Toll Gate in Kaduna, the task force aims to address recent concerning developments observed along major highways in Nigeria. These efforts were emphasized by ACM Zubair Mato, representing the Corps Marshal, highlighting the necessity to enforce traffic regulations within the road transportation sector.

Biu stressed the importance of preventing the escalation of road traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries. He underscored the FRSC’s role as the primary agency responsible for road traffic administration and regulation in Nigeria. The initiative seeks to ensure compliance with traffic regulations by all stakeholders while fostering collective participation and collaboration.

Despite extensive public enlightenment campaigns conducted by the FRSC nationwide, avoidable crashes involving overloaded trailers have persisted. These incidents, often resulting in loss of lives and properties, have prompted the establishment of the inter-agency task force to complement existing patrol activities and enlightenment campaigns.

The Kaduna-Abuja highway, a vital link connecting southern Nigeria, has become particularly hazardous due to crashes involving overloaded trailers. Biu emphasized the devastating consequences of such accidents, not only claiming lives but also leaving behind shattered families and traumatized witnesses.

Statistical records reveal a sharp increase in crashes along the Kaduna-Abuja highway involving overloaded trailers, leading to a rise in fatalities and injuries. The task force members are urged to prioritize the safety of citizens and work towards rewriting the narrative of highway safety.

Biu called upon transport union chairmen to advise their members against the dangerous practice of conveying animals, humans, and goods together. He expressed gratitude for the support extended to the FRSC by various stakeholders, including the Kaduna State Government, local councils, security agencies, and transport unions.

The Kaduna State Sector Commander, Mr. Kabir Nadabo, emphasized the need for a robust strategy to address overloading, particularly among articulated vehicle drivers. He urged motorists to refrain from this hazardous habit to ensure the safety of all road users.

In conclusion, the task force’s primary objective is to reduce road traffic crashes through enforcement, regulation, and public education. Biu reiterated the importance of collective efforts in achieving safer highways and urged all stakeholders to play their part in this endeavor.
