Footballer Ahmed Musa has responded following the circulation of a video wherein he declined to shake hands with the governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The footage, which quickly gained traction online, captures Musa refusing the governor’s handshake gesture. While some interpreted this action as disrespectful, others viewed it as a demonstration of respect, suggesting Musa was indicating that he didn’t consider himself worthy of shaking the governor’s hand.
Addressing the situation, the Super Eagles’ Captain took to Instagram to share the discussed video and provide clarification. He expressed his disappointment at seeing a simple act of cultural deference blown out of proportion on social media. Musa explained that in Northern culture, gestures like kneeling and shaking hands symbolize the utmost respect, which was his intention when greeting the Deputy Governor in that manner.
Regarding his choice to bow instead of shaking hands with the Governor, Musa emphasized that it was a gesture deeply rooted in tradition, meant to honor him. He lamented how this seemingly inconsequential moment had garnered so much attention amidst the pressing issues the nation faces, such as economic hardships, security challenges, and religious tensions.
Musa urged for a shift in focus towards addressing societal problems rather than getting entangled in unnecessary distractions. He encouraged everyone to redirect their collective efforts towards finding solutions to the issues affecting society as a whole.
