Chukwuma Nwachukwu, an Abuja-based lawyer, has taken a significant step to uphold transparency in the assessment process of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Nwachukwu has formally invoked the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, filing a request to obtain the names and scores of the top ten performers in the 2024 UTME………..CONTINUE READING
The motivation behind Nwachukwu’s action stems from JAMB’s recent decision to withhold specific details regarding its highest scorers in the examination. According to Naija News, the lawyer aims to ensure accountability by urging JAMB to adhere to the principles of transparency and public access to information, as stipulated in the FOI Act.
In his demand, Nwachukwu has emphasized the urgency of the matter, insisting that JAMB provides the requested information within seven days. He has cited the provisions of the FOI Act, which grant citizens the right to access information held by government bodies, without the need to demonstrate specific interest.
Nwachukwu’s letter to JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, explicitly outlines the request for details concerning the top performers, including their names, scores, and respective performances in the UTME. He has underscored the legal basis for his demand, highlighting the mandatory nature of compliance with FOI requests.
Moreover, Nwachukwu has expressed his willingness to cover any associated fees, demonstrating his commitment to pursuing transparency in the examination process. His legal challenge comes amidst revelations by JAMB regarding the performance statistics of UTME candidates, with a significant percentage scoring below the average mark.
Furthermore, JAMB has disclosed that the results of a considerable number of candidates are under scrutiny, pending further investigation. Despite these challenges, there has been a notable increase in enrollment among Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs), reflecting a diverse range of participants in this year’s UTME.
