In the wake of the ongoing property demolitions orchestrated by the Lagos government, an unidentified woman has captured public attention in a viral video where she is visibly distraught over the demolition notice served on her property in Lagos State.

In the emotionally charged footage, the woman revealed that the property was purchased merely two months prior, shortly after she and her husband settled into their new home.

With tears streaming down her face, she recounted her distressing experience, highlighting the immense effort and sacrifice they had invested in acquiring the property. She lamented the loss, particularly emphasizing the financial strain, as properties in the Eti Osa area of Lagos come with a hefty price tag. Her anguish was further compounded by the challenge of explaining the situation to her children, especially her son, who witnessed her despair.

This incident comes on the heels of similar grievances voiced by residents of Mende Estate Villa in the Maryland area of Lagos State, who protested against the demolition of their homes by the state government.

In response to the escalating concerns, Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, clarified that the government had issued two demolition notices to the residents of Mende Villa Estate in 2021 and 2023. He cited the necessity of these actions in light of the broader demolition initiatives underway across the state.

Additionally, Wahab hinted at a forthcoming policy where illegal builders whose properties are demolished may be held financially accountable for the demolition costs.

This latest development underscores the growing tensions between residents and the Lagos government regarding property demolitions, sparking renewed calls for transparency and accountability in urban planning and development.
