Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, announced that the federal government has resumed conditional direct N75,000 cash transfers to 75 million Nigerians to alleviate the impact of inflation.

Edun disclosed this during a ministerial sectoral briefing on Tuesday, May 28, marking the first year in office of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in Abuja. He noted that 15 million households nationwide would benefit from the social investment scheme.

As chairman of the Presidential Panel on Social Investment Programs, Edun explained that the cash transfers aim to improve the living standards of Nigerians in the short term.

The government has developed a system to ensure payments reach beneficiaries directly through digital means. Edun announced that Mobile Network operators have been recruited to expedite the rollout of the scheme. Beneficiaries must have a National Identity Number, an account number, or mobile wallets to receive the payments.

Edun emphasized the importance of this direct payment program in enhancing living standards: “This program, involving 75 million Nigerians and 15 million households, provides N75,000 in the immediate term. To ensure public trust, we have a system developed with the Ministers of Communications and Digital Economy, Health, and Youths, adhering to global best standards.”

He added, “Each person must have a National Identity Number, and the payment must be through digital routes, whether bank accounts or mobile wallets. Mobile Network operators have been recruited to ensure a faster rollout.”

This announcement follows the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, by President Tinubu on January 8 over alleged mismanagement of funds under NSIPA. Subsequently, on January 12, Tinubu suspended all programs administered by the National Social Investment Programme Agency and the Humanitarian Ministry due to allegations of misappropriation.
