The Senate has refuted claims of a planned state of emergency in Kano State amidst the ongoing dispute over the emirate succession between Aminu Ado Bayero and Muhammad Sanusi II. According to Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, no such proposal is currently under consideration by the Senate. This statement coincided with the Nigerian Bar Association revealing that its disciplinary committee has received eight memos related to conflicting court orders concerning the Kano Emirate issue.

Tensions have escalated in Kano since Muhammadu Sanusi’s reinstatement as the 16th Emir, following changes in the Kano Emirate Council Law and Bayero’s removal. Political figures like Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party have accused the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress, of bias in the emirate conflict, alleging plans for a state of emergency in Kano. In response, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed these allegations as baseless rumors, asserting that no grounds exist for declaring an emergency without involvement from the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, concerns about potential disruptions to democratic structures in Kano State were downplayed by Senator Adaramodu, emphasizing that the Senate’s immediate focus post-recess includes deliberations on the Supplementary Budget, minimum wage bill, constitutional amendments, and electoral laws. Attempts to reach House spokesperson Akin Rotimi for comment were unsuccessful.
