The decision by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to leave ECOWAS was announced by their respective military juntas on Sunday, citing it as a sovereign act. This move comes amid heightened tensions between the regional bloc and the three Sahel nations, exacerbated by the recent military coup in Niger.

The joint statement by the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger marks a significant turning point in West African politics, shedding light on the complexities of regional governance and the challenges faced by ECOWAS in maintaining unity and democratic governance among its member states.

The withdrawal from ECOWAS is anticipated to have profound implications for the political and economic landscape of West Africa, raising critical questions about the future of regional cooperation, security, and economic integration in the Sahel region.
