Abiodun And Adebutu Clash Over Ogun Local Government Election ResultsOgun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Oladipupo Adebutu, have engaged in a war of words following the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s clean sweep in Saturday’s local government elections. The APC secured all 20 chairmanship seats and 236 councillor positions across Ogun State.

The results were announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Babatunde Osibodu, at the commission’s headquarters in Abeokuta. Osibodu revealed that 19 political parties participated in the election, including the PDP and the Labour Party.

However, the outcome of the polls quickly became contentious when Governor Abiodun’s Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, accused Adebutu of orchestrating violence during the election. Adeniran alleged that Adebutu brought in over 40 policemen from MOPOL 49 in Lagos, alongside PDP thugs on motorcycles, to intimidate voters and attempt to hijack ballot boxes in Ikenne Local Government. He claimed that during the disturbances, Adebutu’s supporters opened fire on Mohammed Efuwape, the newly elected Vice Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, and a voter named Biola. While Efuwape narrowly escaped harm, Biola was reportedly shot in the leg and is receiving medical treatment.

In response, Adebutu’s media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “lies from the pit of hell.” Orekoya accused Governor Abiodun and his security operatives of fostering violence and intimidation in Ogun East. He gave a different account of events, stating that Adebutu’s son had been attacked by thugs near his home, not at a polling unit. According to Orekoya, the situation escalated when the thugs, along with some police officers, shot a member of the security detail outside Adebutu’s house.

Orekoya further claimed that Governor Abiodun’s security forces stormed Adebutu’s home with over 100 armed policemen and armored vehicles, intending to arrest him without a warrant. Adebutu allegedly demanded to see the arrest warrant, but the police left after an hour of holding him at his residence, failing to produce any legal documentation.

Both sides continue to trade accusations, deepening the political tension in Ogun State.
