Despite economic challenges that have led some governors to express concerns about their ability to meet the new wage, Governor Fintiri has taken the initiative to start payments for state employees from August 2024. He also committed that local government workers would begin receiving the increased salary by September.
*Naija News* reports that this decision has been met with widespread approval among civil servants in the state. Many state employees who have already received their updated salaries confirmed the positive development to *Daily Trust* on Saturday. Workers have praised Governor Fintiri for fulfilling his promise, with many referring to him as a “man of his word.”
The successful rollout of the new minimum wage is being celebrated as a significant achievement for the Fintiri administration, earning his government the nickname “Fresh Air Government” from supporters.
In contrast, Gombe State Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that implementing the ₦70,000 minimum wage must include a “consequential” adjustment. Speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting with Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Yahaya highlighted that a committee led by his deputy is overseeing the wage implementation in Gombe State. He stressed the importance of a meticulous process to ensure the correct application of the wage adjustment.
Governor Yahaya noted that the previous minimum wage of ₦30,000 expired on April 18, 2024, and the new ₦70,000 minimum wage, along with the consequential adjustments, is set to take effect from May. He added that in Gombe, a standing committee has been in place since 2020, working closely with labor unions to ensure a smooth transition.
Meanwhile, organized labor has urged the government not to discontinue the ₦35,000 wage award when the new ₦70,000 minimum wage is fully implemented. This position was made known by Funmi Sessi, chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in a statement released on Friday.
