Peter Obi officially joined the ADC in Enugu on Wednesday, calling on his political associates, members of the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders across the country to unite under the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to Obi, the time has come for opposition forces to work collectively to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
“We are ending this year with hope that in 2026, we will begin a rescue mission,” Obi said. “By every lawful means, we will resist electoral manipulation in 2027.”
Speaking after the declaration, Obi’s aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, disclosed that the group’s primary objective in joining the ADC is to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.
“That is our goal, and by the grace of God, we will achieve it,” Tanko stated.
He added that efforts were underway to ensure the smooth integration of Obidient Movement members into the ADC, stressing that mobilisation and enlightenment of supporters had already begun.
“We are focused on educating our members on how to formally join the party. Millions of Nigerians will be brought into the ADC, and this mobilisation will continue until Election Day,” he said.
However, in an interview with Punch, Nwosu noted that Obi would have to engage and lobby other influential figures within the ADC to emerge as the party’s flag bearer.
He acknowledged Obi’s longstanding involvement in the ADC coalition but emphasised that the party operates on democratic principles and internal competition.
“There are many prominent individuals in the ADC who will contest the presidential ticket alongside Obi in 2027. This is a political party where processes are followed. Everyone is considered important, and no one is handed a ticket automatically,” Nwosu said.
He explained that internal negotiations, lobbying, and elections would determine the party’s candidate, adding that even newly joined members stand a chance if they build sufficient support.
“Peter Obi has been part of the process that led to the formation of the ADC as a coalition party. However, what we are unveiling now is only a fraction of our broader strategy, especially our plans to strengthen the party in the South-East,” he added.
Nwosu further stressed that while the ADC has notable political figures, the party’s true strength lies with ordinary Nigerians.
“The party has effectively been taken over by the people. As Aisha Yesufu said during the declaration, this election will be a battle between citizens and oppressors. Those who believe they can manipulate the system with public funds will be taught a hard lesson,” he concluded.
